Fr Deane arrived in Ireland in 1997 and had been
staying in nursing homes. Everything was new to him when he
first returned to Ireland.. Despite the high quality nursing
home provided to him by the Salesian Society, without friends and
familiar environment, the loneliness amplified the adverse effect of
his Parkinson's Disease. Whenever his friends and Old Boys visited him,
Father's mood and conditions improved dramatically.
His life in Ireland could be summarised through
his friends' letters and later reports in
Father Deane Foundation
Fund from Old Boys
and friends who visited him. In his last years, although his physical
health
had continued to deteriorate, with the generous support by the Salesian
Society, the continual companionship of the carer and the frequent
visits of the Trust directors and other Old Boys, Father settled down
and enjoyed his days as much as his conditions allowed. On 9 May 2007
Father passed away peacefully at the
nursing home.
