Ben Lau Report

Dear Fellow Old Boys,

Welcome to the 2002 Annual General Meeting. Hope you and your family if they are present have a pleasant evening tonight.

In the 2001 AGM, I, Steven Lam, Ronald Ma, Henry Pong, Augustine Chan, Christopher Cheng and Kai Keung Yung were elected as committee member. Gary Yeung also expressed interest in helping.

In our first meeting after the AGM, I was elected as the president, Henry Pong the vice-president, Ronald Ma the secretary and Steven Lam the treasurer. Augustine, Kai Keung, and Christopher were  committee members. Gary was the observer.

Unfortunately Steven Lam had to resign quite early due to his own personal busi-ness. Fortunately Gary was kind and brave enough to accept the challenge and stepped up to be the treasurer.

We had a few projects in mind: the Snowy trip in July, a majong night in August and a sports day in October.

Both the Snowy trip and majong night were cancelled due to lack of interest.

However, the first ever Sports Day organized by SLOBA took place on 1st Oct, 01 at Salesian House, St. Marys where Fr. Mathias Mo (another Salesian priest, former chaplain of Chinese Catholic Community, Sydney) lived. Most old boys were exhausted but were happy to experience some old magic of soccer machine, pin-pong, soccer, basketball, tennis etc.

Then Fr. John Foster visited us in late October. About 20 Old Boys attended the occasion, also at Auburn RSL Club. We all had hearty talks with Father and among ourselves. We enjoyed each other's company.

Then I visited Melbourne in Nov., 2001. I had dinner the Melbournian SLOBA president Sam KWOK Yim Sum (68), Joseph Chi Tong CHEUNG (66), William Siu Tong TSE (69) and Fr. Peter TSANG Hing Sum, the chaplain for Chinese Catholics in Melbourne. You can see their faces by visiting the www.sloba.org.au site. From this visit, we have established some links between the Old Boys of the cities.

I like to thank Gary, Augustine, Henry, Kai Keung and Christopher in coming to the meeting and liaising with the members for various functions. Without their efforts, the activities could not have  taken place.

Hope you enjoy tonight and think seriously about joining the committee. It is a bit of hard work and you will get to know the other Old Boys better, which in itself is a great thing.

Ben Lau.
