History

Event

1864

The Fathers of the Catholic Mission took over a small building in West Point, which they turned into a school with twenty boys on the roll. St Aloysius was chosen as the Patron of the school, which since then has been known as St Louis School.

1875

The Fathers were succeeded by the Brothers of the Christian Schools in the management of the school.

1921

The Maryknoll Fathers took over.

1927

The school was handed over to the Salesian Fathers who remained in charge till now. Fr Vincent Bernadini was the first Saleesian Rector of the School.

There are about 40 boys in the school in one small, habitable building.  Workshops were opened where the boys could learn a trade.

1930

300 pupils were learning carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring, mechanical engineering and printing.

1932

Fr Theodore Wieczorek started to build the east wing.

1936

A new east wing was erected and middle school was opened. Fr John Guarona succeeded as Rector and remained in charge for ten years which mostly were difficult war years.

1939

Junior Middle School produced its first graduates.

1946

Fr Peter Pomati became Rector.

1947

Government survey confirmed school area to be 280,000 sq ft. including football field, basketball courts and hall.

1948

Opened English section.

Built the school hall. Later the Salesians added the St Anthony's Church on top.

1949

Fr John Clifford took Fr Pomati's place to become Rector.

1950

Library, music room, Scouts room added to the hall.

1951

Construction of a new building to replace the old one.

First senior middle class opened.

1953

St Louis School presented the first candidates for the Hong Kong School Leaving Certificate Examination.

1955

Fr Bernard Tohill was appointed to replace Fr John Clifford.

1958

Fr Matthias Ling became Rector.
St Louis took part in Hong Kong Schools Music Festival for the first time.

1959

The Chinese Senior Middle School came to an end.

1961

The First Sports Day

1962

Matriculation class in Science opened. Biology laboratory

1964

Fr John Foster took over from Fr Matthias Ling.
St Louis took part in Matriculation Examination for the first time.  13 candidates enrolled in the University of Hong Kong.

1966

Science Exhibition at City Hall
First Swimming Gala (5.10.66)
Prefects' Association established.

1967

1,901 pupils enrolled  in the school.

1968

West wing replaced with a new 8-storey building.

1969

West Wing (Primary) opened by Hon J Canning, Director of Education.
First issue of Aloysians published by the Prefects' Association.

1970

Fr A J Smith took over the direction of the school.

1971

St Louis Matriculation Evening Course began.
Sloba Shield Award set up.

1973

House system was set up.
Independent Club Association was established.

1975

St Louis became a subsidized school.

1976

Fr Julian Carpella became Rector.
Rector's Shield was set up.

1977

Walkathon to raise fund for the playground extension.
Golden Jubilee Grand Concert at City Hall (2.2.77)
Golden Jubilee Science and Arts Exhibition (2.2.77)

1979

Official inauguration of School Extension. A covered playground was also added.

1981

Art was added as a new subject to F.4 curriculum.

1982

Fr P Deane became Rector.

1983

School records computerized.

1984

Primary School run by St Louis Old Boys' College.

1986

Fr Simon Lam became Rector.

1987

Walkathon to raise fund for air conditioners.
Diamond Jubilee Carnival Day (19.12.1987)
Diamond Jubilee Speech Day (19.11.1987)

1988

88 Joint Salesian Schools Athletics Meet (8.2.1988)
Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Nite at City Hall (3.3.1988)
Diamond Jubilee Open Day (12-13.3.1988)
Rector Major Fr Egidio Vigan'o visited the school.

1989

Installation of air conditioners in every classroom.
Computer Studies was added as a subject to F.4 curriculum.
Grand Stand completed.

1990

Sports Day resumed.  Held in Hong Kong Stadium.

1991

Two St Louis students scored Grade A in all nine subjects in the School Certificate Examination.

1992

Arts class was removed from F.4 curriculum.

1993

9th Joint Salesian Athletics Meet.
65th Thanksgiving Nite Concert held at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
Parents-Teachers Association formed.
Walkathon to raise fund to renovate the School Hall.

1994

Putonhua was added to F.1 curriculum.

1995

Project Hope Walkathon '95 to raise fund for the sponsorship of the Project Hope Education Scheme in China.
Overall Champion in the 3rd division of Grade A, B and C in Inter-School Atheletics Meet.

1996

Jin Feng Zhen St Louis Project Hope Primary School in Guangdong China was completed.
Best original script, best director and outstanding performance awards won in the Inter-school Drama  Contest.

1997

Lang Tian Zhen St Louis School Hope Primary School in Guangdong was completed.

1998

70th Anniversary Open Day was held with the Director of Education as Guest of Honour.
70th Anniversary Thanksgiving Concert was held at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
St Louis was one of  the 114 schools allowed to use English as the medium of instruction.

1999

Multimedia laboratory was installed.
Staff room was renovated with raised floor designed for the installation of computer system and the internet.
Economics and Principle of Accounts  was incorporated in the F.6 curriculum.
